Hi everyone! I will be moving to the Detroit area within the next month or two to attend D school. I am hoping to rent in Royal Oak (preferably downtown if possible) for approximately 6 months before my buying a loft or townhome. I am having difficulty determining where to rent. Safety is my #1 concern, with location #2. After finding openings, I have been a bit scared off by many apartments' reviews. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or advice? Anything is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

UDM in the fall? If so, I will be there too! My fiancee and I thought about an apt, but in the end decided to buy. PM for more info.

I live in Royal Oak and you really don't have to worry about your safety in any part of the city. Crime, although increasing due to layoffs in the police force, is very random and not concentrated in any one part of RO. As far as apartments go, I can't really think of any complexes right in "downtown" but there are many in the surrounding area but they don't look what I would call "nice". Older buildings, etc. If you are bent on living downtown, you'll have to find some sort of independant landlord. You probably could easily rent a house within an easy walk of downtown too. I think this is a better option than renting an apt. in the d-town area as they you could probably get a nicer house. Finding a 6 month lease though might be difficult and will probably limit your search.

Thanks for all of your help! Do you know anything about the Urbane complex on Center St. (by 6th & 7th streets)? I'm trying to avoid a private place because I'd like to frent a furnished place-I don't want to buy furniture before I know which place I will buy. In the end though I know I'm looking for a place with some strict parameters so I'll go with whatever fits best overall. Once again thanks so much!

Search Urbane Lofts in this forum. There was an interesting, informative thread on it.

Good luck!

Urbane is overpriced....even if they had good word of mouth. They don't btw.

I don't think you have to worry about your #1 in RO.

Default You get what you pay for/ but the 6 month lease...

Urbane's higher than others, but I'm not sure it's overpriced. They have newer units than many of the old crappy ones you'll find around. I don't think they'd go for a 6 month lease, though. Best bet might be renting a house downtown. Due to the housing situation, I don't think you'll have a problem finding one in downtown for a good deal. And, it's super safe.

Hi everyone & thank you for your thoughts! I came very close to renting from Urbane but just can't get over how small the units are. I've been looking around & I have found a few houses/townhomes that would be flexible in their lease & are still close to downtown Royal Oak. I was wondering anyone has any advice on locale-near the lincoln & washington area vs. curry & 11 mile area. Thanks for the help!

These two areas are both very close to the center of downtown. The Lincoln/Wash. area is closer to freeways but only by about one minute. The one thing about the 11 Mile/Curry area is that there are a couple hotels closeby that rent out weekly and attract some real winners. If you are a couple blocks north or south of 11 Mile it would be better, IMO. Really though, the difference between these two locations is sort of splitting hairs. You could walk from one to the other in 10 minutes at most. If you have exact addresses and want to post them, I will drive by both places and let you know more based on their appearance.
