Can anyone provide an honest appraisal of what Port Huron is like to live? I may be commuting from here to UDM School of Law. I have a daughter who is twelve. I noted that the sex offender registry is high here. Any insight or comments would be greatly appreciated. If someone can recommend some nice areas 30-45 minutes outside of Detroit (Monroe???) in which to live, that would be great.

Stay away. If your going to UDM live in a western or northern suburb. Livonia is best option with the prices of homes. Farmington Hills or Novi is better if you want to shell out a little more money. Anything north along I-75 is better...away from the water the better!

I grew up in Port Huron all my life and moved away asap. I am now 26 living in Chicago. Port Huron is literally where I-94 ends and I swear where are the idiots get dropped off. There are several alternative incarceration programs and rehab's in the area and for some reason once people get out of these programs they just decide to stay. St. Clair county is among the highest in the state for sex offenders, cancer rates, and obesity. Jobs are far and few between and adolescents just seem to find them, selves in trouble. The school system is not what I would bring my son up in although Northern High used to be good, now the higher class kids are just migrating to more expensive drugs and leaving the weed to the kids on the south side. I am not exaggerating; just search the Times Herald; Port Huron's newspaper. The year I left (2001) there were 4 bank robberies and no one behind bars. My mom still lives in the area and not a week goes by that she doesn't proclaim her happiness at my move!! There are many great suburbs outside of Detroit. Troy and Rochester Hills used to be my favorite. Good Luck!

Moved here about 2 years ago after retiring. Have lived all around the country including deep south, west, midwest (just outside Chicago for one). Port Huron offered the geography we were looking for, some of the most affordable waterfront housing I found anywhere, and reasonable access to entertainment and shopping. There are numerous outdoor activity opportunities (hiking clubs, boating, bike clubs, etc.) a small but decent music scene. Other than when I lived in Milwaukee, this has been my favorite place to live. There are some rough areas, but certainly nothing like is found in Detroit, Chicago, Dallas, etc. In addition, the area has much to offer with the lake, two rivers, surrounding green space, and with a small effort could easily be a boom area given the access to shipping, rail, workforce, etc. Downtown is charming with the riverwalk and small shops and a couple of the best coffee shops I have ever seen (particularly the Raven). I am astounded that anyone would prefer Chicago (other than possibly Kindlemart around Christmas.

That sucks, I was born in Port Huron 40 years ago this year, my family moved to Florida back in 1986 and I haven't been back to the city since, but I have very fond memories of the area. Unfortunately my old neighborhood, Whipple St near the river, is long gone.

I lived in Port Huron for 7 years growing up- as well as Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Dallas and Kalamazoo. PH was by far the best place in terms of being a kid. Lake Huron and environs were amazing, the river walk and downtown used to be something back then as well. Re-visiting PH has been incredibly disheartening. A lot of it is attributed to ****-poor urban planning and wretched urban sprawl (as is the case with all of Southeast Michigan). If it had stayed a mid-sized, independent town in the Blue Water region of Lake Huron, as it was in the 80s-early 90s, it would be still great. Instead developers and planners continued to turn forests into strip plazas and farms into tract housing.

However, minus the commute to UDM, I would rather live in Port Huron than anywhere in Detroit Metro besides Ann Arbor, Royal Oak or Ferndale..
