I am the other way. (Windsorer live in metro Detroit) Windsor is old, dirty smelly but it is safe in general, people are friendly. It is very diverse. I used to live in downtown Windsor, tunnel bus offer decent service crossing the border. However, sometimes there are delay due to the border traffic. Crossing border via car is not bad compare other border too.

If you want to go carless, there are few decent apartments in the downtown area, the sub is not bad at all. However, most of them are vey getto. you can find some nice old house behind Erie on the East side, and there are lot of nice house on Riverside Drive. Other than that, most house are very old and rotty. The closest new development is South Windsor.

Downtown are mostly small stores operate. Sub area has all the chain stores available. There is only one decent shopping mall in the area. But most "serious shopper" tend to come over to Detroit for some "serious professional" shopping.

There are lot of small unique restaurant in downtown area, espeically erie street (Italian). A lot of middle-eastern food in downtown area, and some decent Chinese/Asian restaurant west Waynedotte. The sub tend to have a lot cookie-cutter type of chain restaurant like Applebee or Outback.

WIndsor is industrial and has all the general problems that you will find in industrial areas. I spent a lot of time around the University of Windsor.

First, the city is very walkable. All along the Detroit River are miles of trails and well sculptured gardens. It is one of the great walking areas in Metro Detroit.

The condos in the downtown area are very good. Housing around the university is also pretty decent. The downtown area has a lot of interesting shops, many featuring Commonwealth products that are less available in Detroit. The downtown area was nicer twenty years ago when the Windsor Public Market was close to the river. Unfortunately, that was driven out by the casino complex.

The university area has a lot of small restaurants, and many of them Asian.

Agree with Yorkie that the people are very friendly. The ONLY time I have been hassled in years of walking the town was by the bus drivers offering to make me to the strip clubs.

A good number of people, especially health care workers, commute from Windsor to Detroit. In general, there are few delays. However, you will have delays when there are hightened security measures on the US side and when there are labor actions on the Canadian side among the border workers.
