Does he want a 90 minute commute to work every morning from Port Huron? It's really not a suburb of Detroit. There are plenty of affordable houses in St. Clair Shores, just steer clear of the 48080 zip and look in the 48081 and 48082 areas. St. Clair Shores is going through some tough times too but the schools are much better than Harper Woods, they have wonderful parks, the lakefront, some great Italian markets, friendly people, The Nautical Mile, and is a bit more removed from some bad areas than Harper Woods is.

Don't believe everything you read here. You have to visit and drive in the area at different times during the day and talk to the people that live there to get a good feeling of the area.
Warren, Roseville and Harper Woods are not as horrible as some poeple make it seem. They are not glamourous or ritzy, they are just mostly blue collar towns, nothing wrong with that. But they are also very dense, specially Warren and Roseville and there are issues that comes with that.

I have been driving to Warren for work everyday for the past 6 years and I have noticed sometimes they are old ladies in their 70's jogging along 12 mile at around 4:30 to 5:00 AM in the dark. That's not something you see on a "dangerous" city.
