Good, optimistic article about Detroit. If you have the time give it a read.

Great article, thanks for sharing it! My favorite sentence in the entire article is this:

"Like a neglected brownstone or a ramshackle Victorian, Detroit has good bones."

I, too, can see Detroit's "good bones", and I love this city.

One inaccuracy in the article....it was a Ford plant in Wixom that shut down, not GM.

Anywhoo....

There are major universities in the area besides U-M and WSU. U-D, EMU, Oakland U, Madonna, Lawrence Tech, et al. A boatload of talent and facilities to complement any industrial city.

The key to Detroit's resurrection lies with the cooperation of the entire SE MI area, which is mentioned in the article. From public transportation to utilities to the public school system, when these types of infrastructure are focused on, the sky is the limit.

And how long do they think this will take?? It will take at least a decade forDPS to get it together, that is if the city council quits dragging thier feet.
They can afford to be optimistic, I won't.

I'm from Kentucky, Lexington to be exact. The city is soulless with nothing but chain stores and cookie cutter subdivisions.

Though Ohio has a couple of cities with some unique charm (I'm not sure if I should put a "just kidding" here or not.), I love Detroit. Yes, much of the city is in disrepair, yes, it has it's problems... I look at it as character though. The people I have met, even the African Americans (that most of us whiteys seem to be afraid of) have been wonderful, each with a story to tell and always willing to help someone who is willing to swallow their pride and ask. People are polite, friendly, and if you find a circle of friends, you may find yourself like me... Driving up 2 or 3 times a month just to get away from it all, just to be around good people in a city full of soul.

By the way, I am very jealous of your 7/11s and Coney Island restaurants... (Michigan salads... YES.) Please send some to the south.

But in short, Detroit's blemishes are like a beauty mark on a gorgeous woman with a great personality. Your city is fabulous and I really hope to see it rise once again, Detroiters, best of luck to you all!

I wish Detroit nothing but well, but have to laugh over UKUKUK's mis-characterization of Lexington, Ky as soul-less and containing nothing but chain stores and cookie cutter subdivisions -especially as in another thread, he slandered ALL the residents of Lexington's anything-but-soulless-or-cookie-cutter historic and architecturally distinctive Chevy Chase subdivision as "smug" and "far from Lexington's finest".

Sorry, UKUKUK, you're just not credible.
