I'm an optimist. What we need to turn this around is for people, not just conglomerates and billionaire moguls, to start businesses in the city that do NOT revolve around illegal substances or auto manufacturing. Those downtown farms are a great idea, for instance. We need to move away from croissant boutiques and yogurt shops and start making and building things people actually need: food, clothing, furniture, and since we're in 2 wars right now, what about munitions?

Detroit Mayor Bing emphasizes need to shrink city | detnews.com | The Detroit News (http://www.detnews.com/article/20100225/METRO01/2250391/Detroit-Mayor-Bing-emphasizes-need-to-shrink-city - broken link)

I had just posted this in a similiar thread but as many of you probably already know, mayor bing plans to densify its residents closer to the downtown. Its a good first step mostly cause of the money the city can save on infustructure and regulating its population. Cliffie your defnlty right though that Detroit has to lure in businesses and diversify their economy to start seeing any drastic changes. With all that said, it is remarkable that the citizens are taking matters into their own hands to support the city. This truly is a new breed of Americans.
