has anyone noticed that oatmeal for breakfast (along with eggs), while it is supposed to be healthier for you than home fried potatoes, seems to make you more tired, cranky, or even drop your sugar faster post meal than home fries? Ive noticed this on several occasions. Is this because since oatmeal is better than home fries it will regulate your sugar better by dropping it quicker, or is it something in the brand of wheat or oat?
what i am trying to say is that i don't like the effect
No, but everyone is different. That's why I suggest keeping a food diary. You can monitor what happens food wise. And it changes. As I've lost more weight, I'm not as affected by foods, as I am affected by portions. (I'm not a junk food eater or soda drinker).
And I tart up my oatmeal. I put in walnuts and frozen blueberries and milk. The blueberries add enough sweetness, but sometimes I toss in a little dark brown sugar -- it adds a little complexity. Usually just oatmeal tarted up like that makes feel full through the morning and early afternoon.
It is because oatmeal is a better option to have in breakfast than fries, there's nothing to do with the brand, go for the oats which are less refined, because the more they are refined the more they loss their nutritious values.
Slow cooked oatmeal in a bowl pour in hot boiled water with one cube of chicken or beef stock is absolutely better than home fries. It is low glycemic carbs and free from hydrogenated hot oil frying stuff. Go with oatmeal rather than frying foods for breakfast .
Since this is in the diabetes forum I will comment on that. Both potatoes and oatmeal are not really good for diabetics. Of course oatmeal would be the better of the two. Blood sugar would spike too high on either of them. Again, this applies to diabetics. Glycemic index for oatmeal is 55 and for potatoes it is 85, sugar is 100 so you get the idea. The fried part of the potato makes no difference on the BG.
A diabetic eating oatmeal or potatoes.....good luck in reaching a normal blood-sugar without taking meds.
