In the case of T1 maybe it is genetic. No one and I mean no one in my family has had diabetes. I am the first. As for lifestyle read above.
Type 2 also has a genetic component. My mom controlled her by diet, my sister has prediabetes, I am diabetic, and on my dad's side, my uncle has it as do cousins.

I'm convinced that if we had the scientific knowledge (and the much lower numbers) we have today back when my dad had his first heart attack, he would have been diagnosed as diabetic. He drank ice tea by the gallon (regular tea with lemon, no sugar -- anyone else remember sun tea?) and he loved his white carbs...

My endocrinologist says diabetes is often genetic. The first time I saw her, she asked which of my parents was diabetic (my father), and how many of my siblings had been diagnosed yet. I told my sisters what she'd said, and they went to get tested. One of them found out she has prediabetes.

It's frightening the way everyone here discusses taking harmful drugs like they're simply eating bag of chocolates. They are all dangerous, most of them probably more than dangerous than the 'disease' you are trying to 'cure' and you will ultimately have to pay a high price down the road.

Get your diet in check. It's the only real cure. Stop eating rice (brown or white), whole wheat anything, pasta, corn and white potatoes. They will send your blood sugar skyrocketing and keep you fat. Build your diet around fresh veggies (mostly raw & green), some fresh fruit, raw nuts & seeds, lean meats & fish, and good healthy fats (olive oil, flax oil, avocados).

The only thing genetic about type 2 diabetes is the lifestyle and bad habits that's handed down one generation to the next. People are easy prey for the 'it's in your genes" myth, then they don't have to take responsibility for their own health.

The only one who can cure you is YOU. The sooner you begin to realize that, the sooner you can start to live a 'disease' free life.

If you go back to your old diet, your diabetes will come back. If you stay on the new diet, you might be able to cheat a little and maintain... but you are not cured.

Barn door's open, the horses are out. Shutting the barn door doesn't get your horses back....
If you hit your hand with a hammer, your hand will swell and become black & blue. In a few weeks time it will heal. If you hit your hand with a hammer again, it will swell and become black & blue once more. It doesn't mean you now have a higher tendency to swell and become black & blue. It means stop hitting your hand with a hammer.

You most certainly can cure type 2 diabetes. And yes it will return when you keep doing the things that brought it on in the first place.
