Anyone have any luck being pre/diabetic and eating oatmeal? I'm talking about good oatmeal, steel cut or rolled, not instant.

Oatmeal is carby. The best thing to do is to eat a measured amount & test your blood sugars 2 hours after eating. We are all very individual, so only you can know the effects of any food, on your body.

The first thing I gave up was oatmeal, which raised my sugar too high.

CHECK OUT SOUTH BEACH DIET. That is one EASY way to lose some weight and uses oatmeal a lot. Rest is just brown carbs, real meats, veggies and fruits...Add a walk and weightlifting if available, and you may lose enough weight to get off diabetes meds.

Cut out real soda...Eat out at chinese, hold the rice and fried stuff. Or hit the steak or meat places, skip POTATOES and just order veggies. Weight just zooms off...

I know some Type-2's who do ok eating oatmeal, but I'm not one of them. It's something I had to give up completely.

If I have oatmeal for breakfast, my bg runs towards 170. Typically, I'll have my first walk of the day around 11. What I've found is, on days when I have oatmeal for breakfast with no protein, my bg will crash to the mid 60s after the walk.

So, a couple of things:

1. Don't forget the protein

2. Probably best to stay away from oatmeal.
