I am a Pre-diabetic with quickly increasing fasting blood glucose readings in the range 165-200. My internist failed to order an A1C test prior to next appointment.

Sustained readings over 140 will cause complications. It won't happen overnight but over time, problems develop. YOU have to be proactive in this situation. Do what it takes. It may not be necessary to see an Endo. Many of us see just regular doctors but in the end it has to be YOU that manages your condition. Get educated in diet and other aspects of treatment. The docs will prescribe you treatments but you are only with them maybe a few minutes. The rest of the time you are on your own. Take the bull by the horns now and not later.

Fasting 165-200 is not prediabetic.

Fasting 100-125 is prediabetic, diabetic fasting is 126 or over. Diagnosing Diabetes and Learning About Prediabetes: American Diabetes Association®

You and your PCP need to get moving on this, get you to an endocrinologist or diabetes educator, whatever...get your sugars under control.

They did do an A1C - 5.7. Just hadn’t released the test online until after the appointment. I started a new thread about the accuracy of my blood glucose meter.

5.7 is exactly the threshold for a pre-diabetic.

A1c Level
Less than 5.7% Normal (minimal Risk for Type 2 Diabetes)
5.7% to 6.4% “Prediabetes,” meaning at risk for developing type 2 diabetes
6.5% or greater Diagnosed diabetes

5.7 converts to 117.

Since diabetes is progressive, now is the best time to take control.

If you are getting readings consistently in the 165-200 range i think your days of pre diabetes are over, youve got diabetes. i'd consult with the doctor who ordered the A1C test and ask him where do we go from here.
you could also research some diabetic sources in Eugene = https://www.google.ca/search?source=...39.gMBwf98cKRU

In addition to working with your doctor, buy a meter and watch your blood sugar at key times......after meals, upon waking, when you feel "off" and suspect it may be your blood-sugar.
