Will ceramides become the new cholesterol? Seems like altering the ceramide/sphingomyelin ratio so that less ceramide accumulates in the body could be a solution to a lot of metabolic issues including adult onset diabetes. Just posting this to bring awareness to this new to me lipid and prompt some discussion.

"The team fed two sets of test animals a high-fat, high-sugar diet, but reduced the ceramide production in the second group by supplementing them with myriocin, a known ceramide inhibitor. At the end of the 12-week test period, the first group of animals predictably gained weight and became diabetic while the second group did not, despite consuming the same high-fat, high-sugar diet."

Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP) researchers have discovered that accumulation of a type of lipid (fat), known as ceramides, plays a crucial role in lipotoxic cardiomyopathy (LCM)—a heart condition that often occurs in patients with diabetes and obesity. The study, described in a new paper published today in Cell Reports, also identified several potential therapeutic targets that could prevent or reverse the effects of LCM.

This is pretty interesting. The cosmetic industry came out with products that include ceramids, as a skin treatment, and now they've been incorporated into the makeup of certain brands.
