My neuropathy has gotten pretty bad in the last several years with my feet the worst. It has come up my legs covering my ankles and somewhat into the shins. I even find I have it in areas of my stomach as well as my hands with the right being the worst.
In the last year I've fallen a few times with no injuries fortunately. I get up in the middle of the night to use the restroom and find I am very unsteady. In the shower if I close my eyes to say rinse off the shampoo I find myself swaying. I fell the other night in the bedroom when I was unsteady but landed on my knees on good thick carpet so no injury.
Recently my podiatrist surgeon told me that the issue could be neuropathy related as the neuropathy can interfere with messaging the muscles or something to that effect.
There are two supplements, one which I take and highly recommend for neuropathy.
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)
Take at least 600mg a day with meals preferably since it is an acid and can give you a bit of indigestion and/or a slight heartburn. I get this only rarely, I take it on an empty stomach. If I do get it, it is gone in a few minutes.
I'd be curious about the 2nd one as two different Dr's have said these nerves cannot be regenerated but can be slowed down with proper A1C control.
Blood sugar control is to limit the damage to what's been done. High blood sugar is damaging the nerve cells.
You need to get a walker and install grab bars.
There are also slippers for neuropathy, plantar fasciitis, and other foot pain.
You also need to do stretching daily or whenever you feel pain. A lot of the exercises can be done while sitting or lying down. You can move on to more weight-bearing exercises.
You might want to look at ergonomic chairs or seat cushions to improve the blood flow. Try to keep the hip above the knee.

I've heard the opposite. Given normal blood sugars for an extended period of time, nerves do indeed re-generate. In a healthy person, it is estimated that nerves regenerate at a rate of 1mm a day. The keyword here is "healthy". If your blood sugars run higher you stand little chance. The ALA I mentioned does work wonders for me, I take it every day. If I miss a dose, the pain comes back. Here is more from Dr. B, a well-known diabetes doctor. His voice sounds rather mundane but the information he provides is useful. The other videos are about the supplements I mentioned.

Grape Seed Ex works on so many health issues and neuropathy as well. I can't imagine not taking it. I've developed some nerve pain from surgery damages and I know this antioxidant helps me. Do a search.

The problem is that the diabetes damages the blood vessels feeding the nerve cells. The regeneration of nerve cells being discussed is where the nerves have been injured or cut. Before nerve cells can regenerate, the blood vessels have to be repaired.
