My wife is a nurse and she sees fit people with good diets in ER because they were in denial about the symptoms.

Here is a smart-assed journey in diabetes.

When food shopping, the trick nutritionists have shared is: shop the perimeter of the store and skip the inner aisles. That's where the produce, fresh foods, dairy, meat are found and can make avoiding all the manufactured unhealthier stuff easier. I generally follow that plan and it does help.

How diabetes sneaked into my life

Texas attorney is learning to live with condition that affects 1 in 4 older Americans.

Like many health-conscious people, I couldn’t believe I was at risk. Actually, and sadly, I am past the pre-diabetes stage, writes Steve Fischer.(iStock / Getty Images)By Steve Fischer

Sunday morning at the supermarket. My wife likes to shop, but today I’m scouring labels to keep sugar and too many carbs out of my diet. You see, I’m one of the 96 million Americans that the Centers for Disease Control says has pre-diabetes. Texas and the “Deep South” States lead the nation. Over 25% of our older Americans have the disease.
I’m fit and work out, I don’t eat junk food, never smoked a cigarette and hardly ever take a drink of alcohol. Like many health-conscious people, I couldn’t believe I was at risk. Actually, and sadly, I am past the pre-diabetes stage, but everyone should be allowed a little bit of denial.

At my doctor’s office, my wife, Susan, wanted to share in the consultation. “I’m his wife and a nurse,” she said. So I whispered to the staff: “Don’t they all say that?” and she was denied access. As my exam ended, the doctor and I walked out smiling with his suggestion: “Watch your sugar, keep eating fiber, and work out and you’ll be ok”. I pointed to his staff and remarked how helpful they had been, but Susan was livid: “You used your lawyer skills to talk him out of it!” I grinned ... but that was to be my last “victory.”
Armed with my test results, Susan forced me to see a specialist, who, for some reason wasn’t interested in either my opinions or medical theories. Instead, he agreed, that many people don’t know they have diabetes until they wind up as patients, and she saw many finding out for the first time in emergency rooms. Early symptoms may include blurry vision, frequent night urination, fatigue and weight loss. There are alternative explanations for each: too much time in front of a computer, too much to drink, and too much work. By then, the damage was done and when the specialist noted that I had already lost 35% of my kidney function, I wanted to cry.

Back at the supermarket, my tears turned to anger. Reading the fine print on labels is not easy for the many older folks who need to the most. “heart healthy,” “multi-grain,” and “enriched” are not the same as “whole grain” which is greatly preferred for a healthy diabetic diet. “No added sugar” reads nicely, until the fine print “confesses” there are already 13 grams of sugar per serving included. Like many people, I really don’t know much about my kidneys, but suspect I’m better off with them than without ‘em.
I am determined not to buy anything high in carbs or with more than 2 grams of sugar per serving. Artificial sweeteners may be just as harmful. An intended 15-minute supermarket romp became a 30+ minute excruciating journey. Low-sugar products cost twice as much as well. Nothing I purchased seemed appetizing. This was confirmed by my dogs who are normally excited when I bring home groceries, but who now skulked away in disappointment.

The dinosaurs I loved as a child are coming back to haunt me. Diplodocus, brontosaurus and other huge herbivores had to eat continuously to maintain their mammoth bodies. I can relate, because at 5-10 height, I’ve declined from 184 pounds to 163 in three months. I’d whine that I have to eat like my former pet rabbit, but she was able to nibble on bananas, mangos and eat holes through watermelons, none of which are “kosher” for diabetics. I joke that when I ride as a passenger I might as well bring a jar of salad dressing and munch the leaves from the trees growing by each stop sign. Most dressings, unfortunately, contain too much sugar.
One might think with this huge emerging market, the food industry, including restaurants, would produce more low-sugar and low-carb choices that are reasonably appetizing and inexpensive, as diabetes affects lower-income families perhaps disproportionally more than the rest of us. The government should require larger content labels and curtail misleading claims.
As for me I have to wonder what is the value of life if I can’t devour a large (yes I add veggies!), thick pizza. I guess I am going to find out.

Picked about a cup of wild blackberries on my way to Freddies (Kroger's SuperStore), a 2 mile RT for exercise... A few minutes later, started to get tunnel vision. Same thing happen yesterday, so it was not a one-off. Both instances, ate BB on an empty stomach with the previous meal a meat & vegetable broth soup.

I was only trying to do my part in controlling blackberries; !! Eat BB before the birds get to them !!
Appears that my DT2 is getting worse so I am going to let the road crews manage this evasive species.
Only a suggestion, for PNW people.

talk about frequent urination: try BP pills that are diuretic and a spouse (witch doctor) who pushes water intake. ... 3-5 times at nite.

Diabetes can result from being so heavy that your pancreas cannot produce insulin to regulate your blood glucose levels. It can also result from your pancreas simply not producing a normal amount of insulin or not producing it at all. It can happen from your body becoming insulin resistant.

Diet and exercise are important, but there are people who are physically fit with normal weights who suddenly develop diabetes. It can happen at all ages too. Its probably more common above children who develop classic juvenile diabetes. However, I've seen it happen to very healthy older people too.

If you are thirsty and urinating too often it is good to get a medical evaluation including a blood glucose test and possibly a glucose tolerance test.

The prevalence of this disease is rising. It maybe our diets. It maybe an increase in obesity rates. The increase is very real.

diabetes runs in my family .

despite being a gym rate for two decades and still running 3.6 miles every other day i have to stay on a strict diet and trulicity to get back into a prediabetic range.

i was down to a 6.2 a1c on glimpride .

my new endocrinologist put me on trulicity and i am running 30-40 points higher in blood glucose .

i see him in two weeks and he will likely increase me from a half dose of trulicity which is .75% to 1.50%
