I guess there is no such thing as a magic bullet, but I think for most people who are overweight and have tried the old advice of just eating less and moving more and failed it is something they should strongly consider. Why? Because eating this way is not only healthy but it also suppresses your appetite, which is one of the main reasons a majority of people fail long term on simply cutting back on calories. I also acknowledge that you end up eating fewer calories on a ketogenic diet, but you do it with your appetite supressed naturally and less spikes in blood sugar. So while I agree that at a basic level, weight loss can be explained by simply expending more than you take in, in practice this ignores the way different foods (i.e. carbs, proteins and fat) impact blood sugar and appetite. So is it the only way to lose weight? Of course not. It is a very effective way that a lot of people should consider.

As far as your statement that some people do not do well on them, I take that to mean simply that some people cannot stand eating few enough carbs to remain in a ketogenic state. That's no doubt an accurate statement. I'm hard pressed to believe someone who restricts carbs to that level will not lose weight.

Personally, the only thing that has any impact on me in terms of weight loss: eat less, count calories accurately, and do intense exercise. Anything less intense and nothing happens. Daily walks, 10000 steps.... all pointless my body says, that was fun (I am sure it does wonders for my health).

I've been low-carbing for about 2 weeks now and haven't lost any weight (6=50 or less gms/day). This is unusual for me though so I'm going to keep up with it another week or so and if nothing happens I'm going to the doc to get the thyroid checked b/c I have never failed to lose weight on low carb. I have however, failed to keep it off but I'm staying off bread no matter what happens, for at least the next 8 weeks.

Although Atkins is but one method for low carbing, he advocates doing less than 20g of carbs per day for a minimum of 14 days because the vast majority of people will be in ketosis and begin losing weight and experiencing the other benefits of ketosis, i.e. appetite suppression, at this level.

You might want to check it out before giving up. Good luck!!!

Yes, I've been on Atkins before but I was getting too shaky and since I've started a new job and I'm recovering from a 3 year run of bad luck and major stress, I've decided to go easy on myself. I did get 3 lbs off so far and at least one inch off my waist already, so something is happening and then in a couple of weeks I'll think about decreasing the carbs but only if I feel like it. At least I know my blood sugar isn't going crazy anymore and I've decided this is more about health. Also, I continue to get plenty of exercise--tried a new form of dance (for me) tonight, so I'm having fun while I work out. Also, I do a lot of stair climbing at work so there's another positive.

No calorie restriction doesn't work; eat less, move more, no that is not how it works.

So says the guy who has no medical license, no medical degree, has no medical research credentials, and has a PhD in biology, -not- nutrition, and a focus in physiology, -not- nutrition.

This one guy - vs...

hundreds of doctors, research scientists, nutritionists, health care specialists, governments of several countries that recommend WW as a valid weight loss tool.

I think I'll believe some guy whose only fame exists on the internet, and doesn't even have a wikipedia entry. Yeah. Find me a nice bridge in brooklyn too while you're at it.

Well, good luck my friend. I wish you success. It's something I've struggled with as well, so do what works for you and makes you feel good.
