I try not drink anything with Aspartame but I would like to start drinking Pop or Soda with Stevia.

News, At this point, it's common knowledge that high-fructose corn syrup and refined sugar are bad for us. But given all the marketing hype behind different "natural" alternatives, it's hard to know which ones really are the best sweeteners. Complicating matters, new studies, like one just published in the journal Cancer Research, are finding that fructose, a sugar found in high-fructose corn syrup, agave, honey, and, in small amounts, even in fruit, actually feeds some cancers.

I read a interesting little book on the development of the different sweetners a few years back. It was called Sweet Deception, by Joseph Mercola, caused me think about the choices I was making.

I hate scare tactic articles like this. I guess everything you eat is bad for you and causes cancer. Ridiculous...

It's a shame that Rodale didn't bother to actually read the studies, or should would have known that all the "bad guys" are perfectly safe. Most of the negative effects she writes about (like aspartame and headaches) are only known by correlation, not causation. Of course, I guess when your forte is magazine publisher, scientific accuracy comes a distant second to marketing.

You should purge your mind of anything and everything you've learned from Dr. Mercola. That dude is a certified quack and peddles some serious B.S.

Get your information from people who actually know what they're talking about.

Fear sells, unfortunately.

I dont think its really a scare tactic. I just find it awesome that there are more and more studies/research that show that not "all sugars are created equal" (from the corn syrup commercial).
I do not have any white (refined) sugar in my home. I have Succanant, Molasses, Honey, and Stevia in my home. We dont use much sugar except in baking or when my FIL visits. We have nothing in the house that has Splenda, HFCS, Corn Syrup, Aspertame, Agave, dextrose, malodextrin etc in the house. This was after researching it a few years back.

You should find better sources for your research.

The resources I checked were good.
I'm exausted, but one I can name off the top of my head is agave is made from the same plant tequilla is made from. Its heated. The lighter it is the more its heated...the more processes it goes through.

Not if it lead you to believe that the things you are avoiding are dangerous.

I really don't need a study to tell me that aspartame is really, really bad for my brain. Had seizures b/c of the stuff for 10 years and yes, I know it was the aspartame. I begged my brother to stop the diet sodas and he laughed me off until his memory started to play tricks on him and one of his pilot friends told him he should lay off the diet soda b/c it causes those same symptoms and apparently a lot of pilots don't touch the stuff for similar reasons.

I look at it this way: I could ignore the warnings and laugh it off as scaremongering. Then I might or might not have problems. Or I could take it as a caution that something so purely unnatural may just very well have consequences and leave it alone and I will not be any worse off. Esp since I don't drink the sugared soda either. My diet does not need soda or diet pudding or diet jello or what have you--aspartame is not a necessary nutrient.

Oh, and the most aspartame I ever consumed in my life was about 5 diet sodas per week for several months in the summertime. When the weather got colder I switched to hot drinks and I started to notice that the seizures always came in September. By most standards, this is not an excessive amount and since I stopped drinking it, I have never had another seizure.
