But I go to my gym and guys are doing tons of cardio, spot reduction and on protein-rich, calorie restricted diets.
It seems as though men these days are on par with women in feeling the demands to be fit.
I don't think wanting to be fit is gender specific and shouldn't be. However, someone may want to tell those guys spot reduction doesn't work on guys any more than it does on gals.
Because all Americans are fatter and less fit today than they were ten years ago, there are really too few men in the gym. They are NOT more concerned with their fitness than before. The data says they are LESS concerned. A crowded gym just means that gym is popular with the men who ARE concerned.
the old joke used to be women didn't care what men looked like.

We men have always felt the need and want to be fit. Not only for sports but for also attracting the ladies.
How do you know those guys at your gym are trying to "spot reduce" and are on "calorie restricted diets"? One thing that a lot of guys do (women can do this too but seem not to) is "spot improve". Some may mistake this for spot reduce but really its spot improvement. If I want a better "V" shape, I'll work on my shoulders and increase my cardio. This is an example of spot improvement that some may mistake for spot reducing.

People didn't go to the gym back then. Gym memberships are higher than ever. Back in the day, before obesity was widespread, people worked physically demanding jobs that kept weight down. No one was concerned with fitness because there was no reason to be.

Yeah, just watch an episode of Mad Men. They burned a lot of calories going back and forth to their in-office bars pouring cocktails all day long. Even more lighting cigarettes.

That's true, but in the 60s most people didn't go to the gym, or exercise on purpose. They might go swimming or play tennis on the weekends, but they weren't making a special trip to a special building to exercise on a daily basis. The big difference between then and now is food, both in portion size and in quality.
I feel like I look better than about 90% of the women around here, but you'd have to see the women here to fully understand that one.. Sad part is I also probably weigh less than 80% of them..

Absolutely it exists for men. I know more than a few guys at the gym who obsess over what they eat, work out like crazy every day twice a day and are constantly asking me if I think they've gained weight. I think women have every right to expect that the guys they date should stay in *reasonable* shape if they can.
I wish I was as disciplined as they are--but I just can't bring myself to make the sacrifices they do to get into perfect shape. I consider myself victorious if my pecs stick out further than my gut. Win!
