Hi all,

I have a friend who's actively trying to get healthier and lose weight. Although she is losing weight, she does not care to go to the gym. In fact, she believes that maybe she'll reach her weight/health goals by dieting alone.

As some who used to struggle with her weight for a large portion of her adulthood, I view getting healthier/losing weight differently. As much as I've changed my overall eating patterns, I know that exercising is a must for me to maintain a healthy weight. Ive never been successful on just dieting alone, although I do know that it has worked for some.

How have you lost/maintained your healthy weight? Is it your diet alone that is working to help you lose weight? Or are both necessary for you?

I'm interested in hearing all of your stories/opinions.

last year at this time, i ate healthy and restricted my sugars/junk food consumption without exercise. i never got lower than 180 pounds. last september, i tipped the scales at 200 because i went off the wagon. i started dieting + exercising around that time. today, i am 162 pounds. it is different for every age group. i have relaxed my restricted diet a bit and i still maintain my weight. some people say dieting is 70% of keeping a healthy weight, but that is not necessarily true for everyone.

what works for one person may not work for another person.

I went from low 170's to high 140's on a diet change alone. Not too shabby for a 5' 8" male.
I never lost weight exercising. So when I decided to change my diet I wanted to experiment with doing zero exercise above and beyond the occasional bike ride or whatever for fun. The weight fell off.

Now I'm back to exercising for healthy reasons, but not for weight loss. In fact I've gained 5 lbs from putting on muscle.

I feel better when I do both.

However, I can maintain my weight much more easily when I eat wisely and not exercise, vs. eating whatever the hell I want and exercising like a fiend. For me, it's 90 percent about food.

Both is optimal, although you can lose weight without exercise. But since exercise is just about the single best thing you can do for yourself then why not? Also it is much easier to maintain your weight when you exercise.

I can lose and maintain my weight with no exercise beyond my normal active lifestyle, however I find that cardio and weights allow me to eat a little more while maintaining my weight - I also look better - firmer, more in shape....I feel more energetic throughout the day when I exercise. I actually am continuing to lose weight to the point of adding an afternoon snack in order to try to stablize my weight loss. Alternations are expensive.

I have done both. I lost a lot of weight doing Atkins, no exercise. Just carb counting. But, when you go back to carbs, the weight goes back on.

Also, I think it is important to not just look at weight loss, but improving health. Exercise is part of that.

Exercise has very little to do with losing weight. It has a lot to do with being healthy.

Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin - TIME

Why Exercise Doesn't Actually Help You Lose Weight

Given the choice between exercising and being overweight AND not exercising and being less than overweight, I'd take the exercising and overweight.

I don't really diet, as much as having changed my eating habits and what I eat. The kind of exercise or...really...activity...I do is things like walking/hiking, bike riding, and (in the summer) swimming. All of these are solitary activities (aside from other people in the pool, on the trail or sidewalk, etc).

So, no, never been an issue for me.

Though dieting is most important for weight loss exercise is an added advantage. It increases the pace of weight loss and tones your muscle for better looks. If you are losing weight with diet is good but adding some exercises makes it more reliable.
