People who chew sugarless gum and eat sugarless sweets are at risk for chronic diarrhea and severe weight loss, according to a new study published this week in the British Medical Association journal, BMJ.

Researchers say sorbitol, one of the ingredients in sugarless candy, sweets and gum, has laxative properties and is poorly absorbed by the small intestine.

I personally have never seen a product containing sugar alcohols such as sorbitol without the mandatory disclaimer about too much of the product causing GI distress and/or diarrhea. It is also common knowledge and a common warning on many of the internet websites pertaining to low-carb diets. Maltilol is the other sugar alcohol commonly used in things such as sugar-free candy that can cause the above-noted symptoms. However, the effect seems to be temporary and the symptoms go away when you discontinue the offending food.

Foods and gums containing these ingredients seem to be designed for occasional consumption, not to be used constantly. I would bet that the two cases studied were absolutely EXTREME.

There are many studies which relate many things to many conditions. I have to take each one on a number of factors, then wait until next year, when the study contradicting this one comes out.

Wow, where do people get this money to do studies that have already been done? I want a part of THAT!

This is an old story, which also leads to the ubiquitous, yet apparently not stated often enough adage, "everything in moderation".
