My phone has a pedometer and I am having fun tracking my steps. I don't carry my phone all the time but say 80% of the time on weekdays where I normally get only 2000-3000 steps Last week I made effort to take two 15min break for walking and was able to get 5000 steps on average. This week I am pushing myself to 10K steps by walking at lunch and walking after work.

I know actual gym will help lot more but the weather is so nice & walking feels so casual. Normally after gym I tend to crash at home and have no energy to do much. With walking being less intensive, after a quick rest I am full of energy for life/house. But I am wondering if 10K step really is enough to help lose weight if I normally averaged 3K steps/day

If you are burning more calories than you are consuming then you will lose weight.

Depending on how big and old you are, you burn around 1500 calories just being alive. If you are walking 10,000 steps, you may be burning around 500 calories. So you need to eat less than 2000 calories to lose weight. But check your personal BMR to be sure.

Walking 10K steps a day is better for your health than being totally sedentary. However, if you want your exercise to burn a lot of calories you have to raise your heart rate for a period of time. That is more important than how many steps you take. Walking at a brisk pace can raise your heart rate enough to be beneficial but just meandering around for 10K steps a day won't do much.

If its fast paced walking AND you eat clean 1200 to 1500 calories per day you MAY lose weight.

I imagine waitresses and nurses who are both on their feet all day long take a couple thousand steps per day while at work and I see a LOT of them who are overweight. That kinda tells you something.

I imagine most folks reading this would lose weight if they sat on the sofa all day and reduced their intake to 1200 to 1500 calories a day, clean or otherwise.

On a serious note, this whole step-counting craze is probably going to result in people gaining weight. Walk 10,000 steps and then feel justified in eating a little reward.

If you usually walk 2,000 to 3,000 steps a day and ramp it up to 10,000, while keeping your eating habits exactly the same, you will definitely lose weight. If you want to accelerate that weight loss you could begin to eat healthier/cleaner and/or add a little cardio into the mix. I commend you for ramping up your walking and trying to get healthier and wish you well.

Good reply^^^. Figure as a woman you burn somewhere between 80 and 150 calories per mile walked depending on your weight and age. Adding an additional 7,000 steps would be around an additional 2.4 miles per day which would be an additional 192 - 360 calories burned per day. Assuming your diet stays exactly the same, you could expect to lose around 1.5 to 3 pounds per month just by adding the additional steps. You won't lose huge amounts of weight doing this, but you could lose a significant amount over a year or two depending on how overweight you are currently.

The best exercise is the exercise you will stick with. If you're enjoying walking outdoors, by all means continue. If you push yourself to walk faster and farther, you'll burn more calories.

It will be, as long as you don't increase your food intake as well. Try addingother exercise methods as well, such as strength training and/or yoga for flexibility.

It's so refreshing to read a positive response on these threads, in the midst of the chorus of Negative Nellies screeching "you're not doing enough" etc. etc. Walking 10,000 steps a day is better than walking 3,000 steps a day, which is better than sitting on the sofa.

My experience is yes, along with logging your food and calorie intake.
