Finally joined a gym again and will start working out within the next couple days. Just a tid bit of info. I am 23, male, 6' and weigh about 185lbs. I've always been in "average" condition but recently have noticed I'm getting a bigger belly and not in the best of shape anymore. Work, work , work and bad eating habits will contribute to that.
A few things I could use some help with.
1- I drink waaaay too much soda. Any decent alternatives? I know water is what I need to drink. I need my caffeine so that's where the soda's come into play.
2- I'm wanting to lose a little weight, but mostly "tone up". Any good food recommendations? I love veggies, not a big fruit person, and love all red meat basically.

You have also posted this on the exercise board. And the most important thing you can do as I said over there is ditch the soda. Its poison. Learn to love water.
No one 'needs' to drink caffeine. You are now dependent on it, you could wean yourself off, or you can just have a cup of coffee or tea in the afternoon.
Toning up is building muscle. Lift weights, do cardio, HIIT, functional training, tabata..etc...
Hire a trainer from a gym to get a program started for you.
Sometimes I just want the carbonation so I have Seltzer.
For caffeine, I stick to tea and coffee. Tea I can do without milk and sugar, whereas coffee I cannot. I wouldn't cut the caffeine cold turkey but you should look to decrease your intake. How many sodas are you drinking a day???
Caffeine is an addiction that is pretty easy to get rid off. A week cold turkey and it's gone. But if you want to keep it drink coffee. It has no calories and has other positive effects like reducing risks of certain cancers. I'd start with that because if you really are someone who loves vegetables you probably won't have difficulty losing weight without the excess calories from pop.

That was my original thought. I'll do my best to cut soda out completely, and i don't mind coffee so I'll try that!
This is what happens to me when I get off coffee, really bad headaches. But it is worth is, as once the headaches pass, I feel so much better afterwards and I don't crave the coffee anymore. Also have a lot more energy!
OP - it sounds like you know what to do. I would suggest weaning yourself off of the red meats and trying to learn to love other sources of healthier protein that won't potentially give you heart problems or diabetes when you're older, but I know that can be tough. Ditch the soda, drink water. Eat tons of veggies of all different colors. Get rid of any white stuff in your diet - bread, flour, rice, pasta. Switch to whole grains - oats, quinoa, forbidden rice or other whole grain rices, whole wheat or other whole grain breads, etc. Watch the salt, stay away from processed/prepackaged foods and artificial ingredients.
Replace soda with seltzer and green tea for coffee. Drink it asian style, no added sugars or milk. Also try to limit eating out of the house to one meal a week. This includes lunches. Cooking yourself allows you to control exactly what goes into your food and you will eat substantially less (calorie wise) than what you would eating out.
