The sugar conspiracy | Ian Leslie | Society | The Guardian

This is a long read with a lot of history.

Yea yea yea. TLDR but heard it all before in one way or another; sugar is the enemy, or gluten, or carbs, or transfats, or whatever, there's always an "enemy" and long drawn-out analysis of the food industry and how it's all a great conspiracy to get you to get fatter.

Newsflash: companies and businesses are out to make money and profits. They don't give a damn about your health, never have and never will unless it affects their bottom line. Simple as that. Duh.

Newsflash: packaged crap with a buttload of ingredients is bad. Try to eat natural whole foods; but you won't die from a cookie every once in a while.

Newsflash: every food is going to be bad if you consume it in excess. People have been eating sugar way before the obesity epidemic. The only thing that changed is they used real sugar in foods they made themselves, and didn't overeat them.

Newsflash: There doesn't have to BE an enemy. You don't need to swear sugar, or wheat, or whatever out of your life forever and give up on all the foods you love, and then struggle and fall off the wagon and binge and rinse and repeat.

Newsflash: MODERATION has always worked. In all times and with all foods. Moderation and common sense. Listen less to the media. Don't buy into the newest health and diet fads no matter how they proclaim them. This includes trendy diets that eliminate food groups, or setting up 'enemy' foods. Use your head, eat real whole foods when you can, and other foods in moderation when you can't, eat when you're hungry, don't stretch your stomach out with giant portions, and don't set up unhealthy relationships with food.

And you can have the healthiest diet and lifestyle out there and still end up with cancer, or diabetes, or obese due to severe hormonal disease, or a million other things. That happens too and it's genetic lottery and it sucks. No one single food or the avoidance of it will guarantee you a long, healthy, and amazingly-looking life. Sad truth.

Problem is, none of that makes for good profits. So the industries will keep up with each other in throwing out new diet crazes, the latest horribly dangerous foods, the new "superfoods", and new ways to get you to buy crap, and "investigative journalists" will write long-winded "eye-opening" articles about it all. Have fun.

Agree. Lock it right now. I don't think I've ever seen a better first response.

Agree with all said above. Will only add that the more fruits and vegetables I eat, and the less processed food, the better I feel..plus daily exercise of one kind or another.

And yes, yes to moderation. I will always have occasional bacon, blueberry or cherry pie and a bit of ice cream in my life. But it's rare to treat myself and so very good for being rare.

My weight is stable. Just put on a pair of shorts I wore 13 years ago and they still fit. I did a happy dance.
