English mother of two is studied to see how she stays slim despite a less than stellar diet and no planned exercise program. The results are intriguing:
As well as identifying with her eating habits, the main thing I found in common was "moving even when sitting still".
I believe you'll find an awfully lot of calories can be used up during what is commonly thought of as being sedentary. For lack of a better term, let me call it nervous energy.
I have, at different times, put on a campaign to gain weight. It ain't easy.
I read an article once that advised you to fidget to burn off calories. I wasn't sure how many you could possibly burn twiddling your fingers, but I guess it's significant.
Neither of those people craved sugar either which I think is a big factor in packing on the weight.
Well this gives credence to my belief that a cheat day or meal isn't harmful to weight loss. They had a "blowout meal" and it didn't cause any real weight gain. I lost weight while enjoying cheat days and the results have been remarkable.
These folks seems to subscribe to the three square meals per day. At the end of the day though it is calories in and calories out regardless of what the diet composition is. They keep within their caloric range, only the calories are spread across three meals instead of meals and snacks. They do not do indiscriminate eating and they don't eat on the fly. Food is something they enjoy but they don't constantly think about it. They eat their big meals and then go about their lives. Sadly, it's a struggle for me and many people not to eat indiscriminately, so I have to work with the cards I've been dealt.
But I can't quite say that they're doing anything groundbreaking to stay slim.

It's been studied and the fancy term for nervous energy is "non-exercise activity thermogenesis", or NEAT:
Thank you Suzy. That makes it sound like a positive thing.
I can pretend that saying "I'm NEAT" adds to my modest list of positive qualities
