First of all, I'm not trying to offend anybody with the title. I know we are all allowed to go to any gym regardless of any shape and size.

Please read on...

So as part of my New Year's Resolution, I wan't to loose weight and be healthier. Right now I'm borderline over-weight and obese. I've join gyms in the past and honestly I can't stick to going. My personal issue is that I just don't feel comfortable working out when almost everyone around me is fit. I've joined 24 hour fitness and LA fitness. Besides not feeling comfortable, my local gyms are always so crowded.

So my question is, are there any gyms that are aimed for overweight people? Possibly in the Los Angeles Area??

Thanks for any answers/ suggestions...

Do you have to go to a gym? You could look on YouTube and find some fitness videos to try at home, then when you feel more comfortable expand your workouts to the gym. Go for walks outside that transition into runs as you get fitter. If you've got the $$, hire a trainer to come to your house, or buy a treadmill and/or a weight bench. Gym workouts aren't the be-all end-all of getting fitter and healthier.

Perhaps you should look into home gym equipment. If you begin an exercise program at home AND FIX YOUR FOOD INTAKE, you will probably get into good enough shape to not feel out of place at the gym. Personally, I would never set foot in a gym. I would simply never go. I have a treadmill, rowing machine, ab machine and Total Gym in my house which is enough workout for a 65 year old. It's hard to ignore the machines when their right in front of your face.

Don't join a gym. Find a fun hobby thhat burns a lot of calories and that you enjoy enough that even if you are sore and tired you are excited to go again.

Gyms are boring.

I went to gyms for years, Jack LaLanne in Santa Monica back in the 60's, LA Women, LA Fitness in MDR...after I pretty much destroyed my joints, I bought a recumbent bike (used) and work on as best I can...it's in the livingroom.

Push away from the table, is best exercise to start with.

I would get the idea out of your head on what others think, they don't care. They are thinking about you. Sometimes we NEED to commit for results.

I'm fit and HATE going to the gym. I simply can't stand having to GO somewhere to do something I don't enjoy already.... so I work out at home. LOTS of bodyweight exercises (aka calisthenics) to get you going, then you can pick up a couple things later as you grow into them (couple weights and a bench). My "home gym" is about $200 worth of used stuff, most of that being a set of adjustable dumbells, and would fit in a closet if I needed to put it up.

Just be aware that Diet is easily 80% of the weight loss challenge. Keeping an absolutely perfectly detailed food journal being the #1 thing you can do there (well, and knowing your proper caloric needs so you can create a shortage).

Maybe try a YMCA that offers fitness classes? Might feel less judgy.
Or adult education fitness classes?
Zumba classes?

Maybe look on MeetUp to see if there is a chubby walking group, and yes I am serious. they exist.

I'm not in LA so can't speak for the area.

Planet Fitness is supposed to be a judgment free gym. It is cheap, and serious gym goers tend to stay away from it. See if there is one near you - they seem to be popping up everywhere.

The one thing you need to remember if you go to any gym, people are there to workout and no one cares or gives a rip about what anyone else is doing unless it effects their workout. You go, you commit to your workout, and then you leave.

Plenty of real fat people in the gym. You won't be alone. No need to worry. No one cares and even if they do, so what.

The gym I go to, there is a really big lady who I see there all the time AND she walks with a cain.

Now that is some drive and dedication.

She inspires me more than any fit person in the gym and I know I am not the only one.

Be brave, you will inspire others.
