I think people tend to become less active as they age. I've increased my physical activity and become a regular at my gym. I'm losing weight and eating pretty much the same diet and quantity as I used to.

That 10% per decade is a measured statistic. Statistics don't apply to a single person, they predict only what happens to a population. You can choose to not be a part of that population by acting different than the population.

The 10% rule can not apply to you if you march to a different beat. I'm exercising to stay young.

It's a good thing I'm still working, swimming laps and mountain hiking, can you imagine how much worse it could be if I slowed down?

OP, we need more info, before we can suggest an appropriate strategy. How old are you? Is there any chance this weight gain around your middle could be related to middle-age hormonal changes? If so, there's not a lot you can do, other than look into hormone replacement therapy. Hormonal change programs a lot of men and women to suddenly start gaining weight around the middle. If this doesn't apply to you--if you're younger, then increase your level of exercise, and cut back on carbs. That will help.

I can do this too, for a month or so and lose 10 pounds. The problem comes when I start eating other things again, I gain. How do you maintain the weight loss?

Yes I can! I had an amusing moment yesterday, walking across the supermarket parking lot to my car, thinking as I walked how much better my stomach area has been feeling. Then I saw this fat man about my age getting into his car, coughing in a way that made me believe his cough wasn't disease, but rather was lifestyle choice related. (Probably a smoker.) I chuckled to myself although I probably should have felt pity.

I see it over and over and over, people making bad lifestyle choices. I see my own life of bad lifestyle choices, as one by one I flip them over to the correct choices. In fact I've reached a point in my life where I have almost no bad lifestyle choice baggage.

People don't understand that diet means two things. Diet means a short term reduction in food consumed intended to accomplish weight loss. Diet also means the nature, variety and quantity of food a person (or animal) consumes on a regular basis.

People often mistake that a temporary diet will fix things. It will, but if you return to your old diet your weight will return to normal for that.

If you want to effect a permanent change in your weight then you will have to permanently change your diet. Temporary diets only work to lose weight to reach a target, and then follow a diet consistent with staying that weight.

So true. Being sedentary is not an option anymore. Thanks to working out I no longer take medication for my arthritis. Instead of losing muscle I’ve become muscular. This forty plus woman who never lifted weights before is picking heavy things up four days per week. Forty something years old and I’m ripped now. Lifting is my hobby now. I feel very proud of my work in the gym and hopefully this will set the tone for when I enter my fifties and beyond.

Oh Riaelise, that's my motto too! I thank my workouts for my prancing around at my age. I have a nice workout schedule and do it whenever I feel like a trip to the gym to recharge my batteries. I also owe it to dinners like tonight where i made a salad and chunked in left over steak etc.

I'm not ripped but I feel an increasing sense of wellbeing and a new muscle tone coming on. I'm getting well equipped to date women of my generation who have also taken care of themselves, and maybe me and my future lady can pretend we are Gen X!

I'm seeking rapid belly fat reduction in my dog. This thread inspired me to work harder at adding protein and reducing kibble with all the carbs. She's hungry from the total reduction in food, but her mouth is happy to get sardines, tuna, eggs, etc.
