This guy's selling something?
Ok... I'm buying, but only in practice. I'm not giving him any cash.
Nobody has to buy those books. All of the information is free online, on YouTube vids and various websites. If he were mercenary, that wouldn't be the case.
There are lots of folks whom I admire and who make significant contributions to their area, who also have books out. All of them, in fact; John Robins, McDougall, T Colin Campbell, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris. It's a very long list. People who have ideas write books, and the books frequently cost something to purchase. How does that make the authors frauds, crackpots or shills?

I think the problem lies in that diet books tend to be fads, or misinformation and sometimes downright comical. Of course respected professionals should not be lumped in with the rest, but sometimes those respected professionals miss the mark as well. I am not saying Dr. Fung is off the mark.
It seems every few years someone wants to reinvent the wheel on how to lose weight,
Again, dieting is a personal quest and clearly one size does not fit all. I guess I am one of those rare birds where CICO works, especially paired with exercise, which I do on a regular basis.

The research in autophagy which garnered the Nobel Prize is not easily dismissed. This appears, to me, a completely different category of thing from the usual diet book fad, though people are quick to lump them together. I could be wrong; I'm not a scientist and I have no training in medicine.
I've been doing IF for four months now. It's a big change, experientially. But would it be possible for the apparent thousands of people reporting positive results to be deluded? Sure.
No,I think Fund was right first time ...
His " miracle cure " is basically just another variant on inumerable other fasting diets which are basically cutting calories.
The problem with these is that you get hungry. And irritable. It's why domestic violence in Muslim households spikes during Ramadan.
Dieting based on hunger is doomed to failure.
There is no reason why a person cannot eat sensibly without getting hungry and still lose weight.
Eat green vegetables and salads, grill lean meat and fish and reduce the amount of white carbs while cutting out sugar and processed food as well as going for a good walk every day will see pounds drop off rapidly.
Heck,if I cut out the daily booze I neck I could take 5,000 calories a week out of my intake.
You don't need a Dr in front of your name to work that out.

You probably have no conception of how when you say, grilling meat (as if that's okay), it nauseates some people.
