Another great story about using balance and perspective to achieve and maintain your fitness goals: Fifty Percent Rule.
The key takeaway for most of us should be to "Don’t force yourself to do workouts or eat foods that you hate. When you adopt positive lifestyle habits that bring you joy, living a healthier lifestyle is easy.". Or in simpler terms, find what works for you and go with it.
Wholeheartedly agree. It has to be a lifestyle change and the only way it's gonna be a lifestyle change is if you actually like it. Personally speaking, elimination/severely restrictive diets never worked for me. What ended up working was following the calories in/out mantra, eating a variety of foods as long as I stayed below X calories. I basically eat right 80% of the time, and unhealthy 20% of time, every week. It's been over two years now, haven't deviated much. Never feel deprived. I largely eat and enjoy everything.
Same with exercise - I found an activity that brought me immense joy (weightlifting). When you find something you enjoy, you actually feel good doing it and it becomes a part of your life.
