hello,

I've managed to lose 8.5 lbs following an insulin resistance diet but I'm finding I can't visually look at food and know proper sizes. I can't look at some food and know it's the size of a tennis ball or the size of a cd. For apples or other fruit, I can't look at it and know it's a small or large apple without having examples of both side by side.

I'm thinking I need to use a food scale to help me control portion sizes. Any recommendations on what to look for when buying a food scale or particular ones anyone likes? I'd prefer something small and that you can put a plate on and reset to zero as you put different food on the plate. That way I could use one plate but still measure each food separately.

Thanks for any advice.

Dea

Congrats on your weight loss! Keep it up. Good idea to go with a scale if you are unsure about portion size. A lot of studies show that people routinely underestimate portion size and that food labels can also be significantly off as far as total weight, and are given leeway to be so. This can undo weight loss efforts and I imagine knowing for sure would be very helpful when you're trying to maintain a steady weight.

It's probably best to go with a digital scale for ease of accuracy, and there are some nutritional scales out there that will also give you the nutritional value of your food and track your daily intake, which is pretty neat if you are concerned about nutrition in addition to calories. I'm considering getting one myself because I really like the idea of the nutritional information, and that's my main concern vs. calories. I like to know beyond just "what's good for you" because we all generally know that, but some apple varieties are better than others as far as nutrients and fiber for instance. I like to know the detailed vitamin breakdown, etc. so that I can maximize nutrient intake and not have to rely on supplementation, which has pros and cons IMO. Right now I look that up on some websites but it would be convenient to have and track it in one place. I just don't know whether I would take the time to weigh my my food regularly.

If you are interested, just search under "nutritional scale". I saw some on Overstock.com and target.com but I bet they are all over the place. Both sites should have regular digital kitchen scales as well. Continued success with your program and happy hunting!

I just bought a Taylor food scale from Walmart.com With shipping and tax it cost $26.00

It's the scale that was featured on The Biggest Loser. So far I like it and would recommend it highly. A very important feature to look for is TARE weight. That's the weight of the food MINUS the weight of the container holding the food.

Besides, it looks nice sitting on my kitchen counter.

Here is my scale:

Congratulations on your weight loss thus far!

Hey, gr8doglove! I am also using this scale and I like it so much. It helped me a lot on my weight loss program. For a weight-and-diet-conscious like me, it is a major tool. I hope this will also be effective for Dea.
