The quickest way to get excess weight off is to cut calories and do some some of cardio exercise (the more the better!)

I LOVE Lose it!!! Its so convenient with my Ipod!
Sparkpeople- I use it alot for recipes and clean them up so I dont eat something I have cut out of my diet. There is a cheesy pasta skillet that is really good on there (and its clean
). I dont count calories, but I normally do focus on protiens, carbs and fats. Along with 4-6 meals a day(basically clean eating/ eat clean diet). I've also cut out sugar, salt, high fructose corn syrup, enriched flours, and hydrogenated oils (the basic stuff that even Dr Oz has had people cut out and they have lost weight). Also exercising weight training and cardio!
Get determined and you will do great!
Liza- if your not sure about it, then do more research on things. Trust me, I've been in your shoes and wanted something that I could control at all times without taking pills to obtain my goal and also didnt cost an arm and leg. You will find what you are comfortable with.
BTW, since its spring time, here is a great recipe to cook on the grill. I promise you its really good. We made them for a cook out a couple of weekends ago and got many compliments and people asking my husband for the recipe.
