Chester our Aussie Cattle Dog mix and I were out playing fetch while on vacation and we were at the top of a hill with the entrance road to the resort below the hill. We were playing fetch on the hill making sure not to have the ball cross the road, but one time it did. Chester went hustling down the hill and I got a little scared, hoping no cars were coming (none were fortunately) but as he got to the road, he stopped in his tracks looked both ways and continued on to get the ball and did the same on the way back! Our whole group (family and extended family) looked in amazement and good ol Chester boy got double treats when he got back!
We have been keeping a very close eye on him since we rescued him last August and just getting him used to running "free" out of the dog parks, etc.. We also live in a very low traffic neighborhood where he rarely crosses the street so it was odd. Just thought i woudl share to see what everyone else thinks

I not only don't think it's common, I think it's downright AMAZING!
Chester is a brainiac!!!! Go Chester!!!!! (Well, not really GO. Look both ways and then GO! )
ETA: Not only would Artie not even consider looking both ways, he's so focused on his mission (whatever that is) while we're out walking, he's been known to walk right into cars. Luckily, they've been parked cars. But, that said, he often ventures (on his 6-foot leash) right into the path of a moving car. Of course, I move him back quickly (and the cars in my cul-de-sac go slowly and are nowhere near when I pull him back), but still... he's got a small brain. On the plus side, when I say "Wait for the car" when we're at a corner, he's good about just standing next to me until the car passes. And then he's off like a flash again.
I wish I had a camera rolling for it, but it would have been a bad video if a car were coming. Luckily it being the entrance to the resort and not a big day for people coming and leaving...
We have been working very hard with Chester to be a well behaved dog since when we first got him he wasn't very social and his dominance was getting the best of him. He is turning into a great family dog.

It is not necessarily unusual but far from common. No doubt before you rescued him he had spent some time on the street and learned how to take care of himself. Smart dog!
