Well, that's an excellent point. Perhaps none of this story seemed odd to anyone there.
I'm still floored that his wife, who is an RN, told him she thought he had diabetes but when he refused to go she shrugged her shoulders and went to make a tuna caserole. I'd be dragging John kicking and screaming to the doctor. And if he put up too much of a fight, the doctor could treat his resulting concussion when we go there too!
