We've left our two dogs at the boarding place every summer for 2 weeks when we were in our 30's and 40's. No problems. Now we are in late 50's and are leaving for another 2 weeks, but we feel awful about it. They are our children and we are very affectionate towards them. We are 'Dog People'. This time we are very upset about leaving them, maybe because we are with them all day and we always interact with them, take them to the dog park, etc. WE love to spoil them as long as they know right from wrong! My wife and I just feel so much from all the dogs we've had over the years, but this 'feels' different. My brain knows they'll be safe and sound, but we both have heartache at the moment knowing they won't be with us. I wish I knew how dogs feel when they have an indoor and outdoor run available to them 24/7, but without us being there.
