Does anyone have experience with this product or one similar?

Halti Headcollars Control Dog Collar - Dog Supplies (http://www.dogsupplies.com/products/Halti-Headcollars-Control-Dog-Collar.html - broken link)

Must find something other than the prong collar as my dog "sprung" a link in his on our evening walk, got away, and ran in traffic tonight. Cannot have that happen again as neither of us will live through another episode like that one.

Some people love them but, like any other tool, they can be misused. IF your dog is a hard puller it is possible for a head halter to cause neck and/or spinal injuries. Also, in my experience many dogs absolutely hate the things and they can rub sores on the dog's nose especially if the dog is constantly trying to rub it off.

It is recommended to have a back up collar hooked to a lead when using a prong collar especially if you happen to be using one of the less expensive ones often sold at pet supply stores. I've rarely heard of a Herm Sprenger collar breaking apart. Personally, I'd go with a Martingale type collar rather than a head harness. Here's a link to one example: Herm Sprenger Double Row Martingale Chain Collars - Chrome or Brass Plate: BowWowShop.com There are other styles including ones that are part nylon and part chain, and all nylon martingale collars.

ive used haltis, they work very well for sensitive aware dogs, with consistent work...
they do not work well for stubborn hard pullers (ive found them absolutly useless for bully breeds) or breeds with long bodies (doxies, bassets ect) as they can case neck/back issues.

ive only had limited luck with prongs, again it seems to be dependant on 1: the dog, and 2: the person training/handling the dog.

look at the easy walk harness too.

I'm glad to hear nothing bad happened after that episode!

I used the Halti with both my border collies, and it worked like a charm. Instant success. After several months I no longer had to use it with either of them. Now, with my 10 month old ESS it has been a different story. Maybe it's because I'm using the same Halti and it's design is outdated now, but it doesn't work as well with her. If I keep it snug, she can't really open her mouth all the way, and it prevents her from panting properly which is not good. So naturally I loosen it a bit, but the minute we stop she starts swiping at it and eventually manages to pull it off her muzzle. I don't know if it's because she has a wider muzzle than a BC, or if my version of the Halti is outdated and a new one would fit better. I will say, it works wonders with her when it's on properly, though! I can walk her with a pinkie if I wanted, I have complete control. I just can't stop walking or she pulls it right off.

Someone just last week recommended the Gentle Leader to me. I've also been wanting to learn more about the Easy Walk harness which is supposed to be good, I guess both are made by the same company. Foxywench, can the dog run in the Easy Walk harness? I read on the website I think it was, that it could cause rubbing issues if the dog runs with it.

we tried that and it worked okay when we were walking with no distractions. but when dogs would rush up to greet my dog, he would panic and get tangled. we switched to the easy walker harness and really liked it. but we only used it for a short period as a tool for training. he now walks next to us without pulling ahead. if he 'forgets' we use the harness again for a bit.

Oh no! Glad the incident ended well, but how scary that it happened. Odie has a halti. It came with a DVD, which was helpful. It works for him, although we don't need to use it very often.

Both of my dogs have Martingale collars. They tighten when the dog pulls, and it makes it more difficult for the dog to slip the collar.

ive heard of some people having problems with the easywalk, but i think alot of it has to do with fitting it properly, like a collar, 2 fingers laid flat should go under comfortably. when fitted right it doesnt usually cause problems.

i have found they can be a little more problematic on larger chested breeds though.

Thanks for the feedback. He's a hard puller when he sees prey so sounds like that is not going to work. Martingales are a no go, he pulls and pulls against them.

the easy walk or sporn no pull might work for you, combine it with the turn around method...(he pulls towards somewhere you walk him in the opposite direction for a few steps to redirect)
and keep his favorite treat or toy on hand as a reward for good behaviour at ALL times and only use that reward for training
(i use all beef low sodium hot dogs for this purpose)

Comments above in blue

We may try the easy walk in the future if it becomes necessary. It takes a seatbelt strength harness to hold him as he busted a car harness last week that had plastic attachment points. In the meanwhile I'm going to try an industrial prong with a "dominate dog" collar alonside per the recommendation of another poster.

Oh, If anyone wants to buy my pup's martingale collar at a discount it was from this manufacturer but bought a a local dog "boutique" http://www.k-9designs.com/index.php?...u79udkqvos90h2
It is blue plaid, worn once, 2" wide design and I'd call it a "large". I paid $39 new. PM me with an offer!
