Last week we took our dog to the vet because he had a skin infection and he was seen by a vet and was checked to be ok and was prescribed cepholexin for the irritation. We give him 1 pill per day and it makes him inactive like it knocks him out. Just today he was urinating blood. The side effects for this pill are bleeding in urine.

I read it could be an infection but the pills he takes apparently stop that from happening so it could just be a side effect of the pill? He has never had blood in urine until today, the same week we give him these pills. Either way I'm taking him to the vet tommorow. I just had a death in the family and cant have another one. I am scared.

Cephalexin is an antibiotic similar to penicillin. It is used to treat skin infections as well as bladder infections. Blood in the urine is not a side effect of this drug.

I'm glad you are taking him to the vet. Please let us know what happens.

My dogs both did this, and it was a bladder infection, anyway, when I did call the vet, he knew exactly the problem. Me I just was so very worried, the vet was correct. They both led a great life, and were very healty til old age at 14.

I've never seen cephalexin cause bloody urine. It's likely that there are bacteria in his bladder that require a different kind of antibiotic. Let us know what the vet says!

He had a urinary tract infection, Dr said had some bronchitis and had a hot temp (possibly fever as well). Had to take him to an emergency vet yesterday and they gave him a shot with vitamins and some antibiotics and some pills that will help his Urinary tract infection and skin irritation. He is able to walk on his own today and didnt hesitate to get out of his cage for a walk. Urine isnt bloody today.

it might be something more serious than that, some dogs get glomerulonephritis after skin infection, immune kidney inflamation, make sure u visit ur vet for follow up and see if the dog is not playful as usual
