I don't know if this might be "too late" to address since my dog (a 10 lb papillon/chihuahua mix) is about 3.5 years old. But I recently started doing some running and have thought about taking the dog with me (either running, or if I ever start rollerblading again)... the issue is that whenever I start to run, he chases me (and wants to play) instead of runs WITH me. Is this correctable? If so, how should one approach this?
of course is it correctable, just takes some basic leash training. put the dog on leash, never walk or run wiht your dog offleash, not only is it dangerous its also illegal in most places.
start with basic leash manners, you want your dog walking at your side with a loose leash.
once basic leash etiquite is learnt speed up your walk to a power walk, then to a light jog, then to a run...
right now he obviously doesnt quite knwo whats expected of him, jus that your running it would be fun if i run after you...dogs LOVE chase...
the key is to teach him, 'when i run i want you to run at my side" and this is jut simple repitition.
and keep runs short at first, running, especially on concrete/hard surfaces is hard on the joints.
hell get it, just start slow and be persistent. once hes got the hang of it on a normal leash you can buy a hands free leash that clips to your belt.
Thanks for the tips. He is (for the most part) good on loose leash walks, sometimes a tug here and there to go faster, but when I do start to speed up he just wants to chase me lol. I will try your suggestions, thanks!
definatly work him up slowly, you might also want to keep high value treats as lures to keep him by your side rather than him dropping back into a chase.
I would hate for you to use that particular breed as a running or blading partner. They have tiny little legs, tiny little hearts and would have to run at full speed to keep up with you, they could easily become overheated and/or have a heart attack. These breeds are not running dogs of which there are plenty that would love to join "your pack" and be your running buddy...maybe even a grayhouse rescue or other working breed or hunting breeds that love to get out. Save that little guy for very short runs, then take them back to the house and keep going with the bigger dog.
