I did a search on this forum for 'Car Pet Cover" and the google ads that showed up were the same thing that I bought at Bed Bath and Beyond...... The thing STINKS - literally - it has some sort of chemical smell that would not wash out and Febreeze added to the dryer did not do any good.... I am taking it back tonight - This is a good example of why I NEVER buy the crap that they sell on late night TV - but I thought BB&B would be OK... The product is Pet Rider - good idea but pizz poor product....

I like mine as well. My only complaint is that it came in black and the advertised color was tan. With a blonde dog it shows more hair that I would like but cleans up easily.

It should not have any noticable smell besides the limited, shortlived, outgassing once removed from the package. Its possible yours was in a contaner or crate with somethingt hat released the bad odor. When you take it back, have them get another unopenned one off the shelf to see if it has the same smell. It's also a remote possibility that someone bought it, their pet made a mess, they tried cleaning it with some chemial and brought it back but claimed it was never used or open and it ended up on the shelf.
