so, miss roxie is NOT a cold, or even cool, weather dog.... she is shivery in the car when the temps are still 45-50 degrees, so she will likely be a popsicle by December if I don't get her something.....
i am looking at coats and snow suits and wanted to ask y'all's opinions and advice......
the coats cover only the body of the dog.... the snowsuits extend down over the dog's legs..... is that beneficial enough to be worth the extra expense??
any suggestions on websites to look for these things?? any particular brands or stores you can recommend?? or warn against?
Hi Latetotheparty-
We have to do the same thing for our doggy, he hates the cold weather! He refuses to go outside unless we have a sweater on him. We tried to buy him the snowsuit that extends down his legs and he hates that. So...we just end up with a sweater or medium size jacket. We found ours at Target, and a couple others at PetSmart. That reminds me to go put it on him when I get home. I have also ordered from Dog Clothes, Dog Clothing & Dog Fashion at BaxterBoo to get sweaters in the past. Best of luck to you
My Fiona doesn't have much coat or body fat and she gets cold really easily and shivers...and I'm in Michigan so we have long cold winters.
So far I've just bought her a couple of coats at Pet Supplies Plus - she's OK with short legholes (armholes?) and I've tried a couple of other coats. What I've found....velcro really doesn't seem to work well as a fastener. It gets gummed up with dog hair really quickly and won't work. Also don't waste extra money on hoods...I don't know how many dogs really need or want a hood!
The one I use most is a snow suit with a faux fur collar, it looks quite cute on her plus she can run like a mad thing. But the Velcro became useless within weeks so I use diaper safety pins to keep it closed.
Make sure it's well-fitting if you want Roxie to be able to run or anything. Fiona's a difficult size...she's very deep-chested so around the chest she's a medium, even large in some coats. But she is really fairly small (25 lbs) and has a teeny waist. I loved that site but am leery about getting something without trying it on....places like Cabelas and REI, that have stuff for outdoorsy/hunting dogs might be a better bet for active dogs. Unless you just want something to keep her warm while going out to potty.
Check out your local craft fairs. There are several people in our area who showcase their pet designs and that 's where I get Darcy's coats. You will need to measure, but I have found some really nice things for Darcy, including her pink leopard coat.
Can't help with where to get them, but a warning to never turn your back while they're wearing them! We had a senior poodle that was nearly as thin as Giz and she had one. I put one on her one day, went to the bathroom and when I came out she had it wrapped so tight around her neck she could barely breathe. I found her laying on her side desperately trying to kick at it and get it off her. Scared the crap out of me!! From then on I kept it at the door and put it on as we walked out and took it off and hung it up as she walked back in.
thanks to all of you!! i was looking at one with a velcro closure on the back.... hadn't thought of the velcro getting clogged up, but it makes sense....
i have taken her measurements and will also check out the GIANT flea market up the road from my house this weekend.....
