PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- A man who broke his dogs out of an animal shelter before they could be euthanized is in jail, and the dogs are being held at a secret location, deputies said.
Authorities said the man owns four pit bull-husky mix dogs that were being held in outdoor cages at an animal shelter after police in Chimacum said the animals mauled a neighbor's cat.
The cat belonged to Erin Kithcart's sister.
"They had attacked the cat in the yard and were dragging it out of the driveway," Kithcart said.
The dogs -- designated by animal control officials as dangerous -- are set to be put to death if the owner doesn't succeed in an appeal.
Jon Hartman, 34, is charged with breaking into the animal shelter and stealing back his dogs by using bolt cutters to cut through the cages.
