Tonight DH and I were watching TV with Toby under the table on his blanket when this gawdawful scream pierced the air. I turned off the TV and sat upright thinking it was one of the children upstairs but DH said it came from Toby. He wasn't breathing hard and barely seemed awake but DH said he has been spooked lately on their walks by the dead Christmas trees by the curbs and he thinks Toby was having a nightmare.

Honestly it sounded like somebody was being murdered. Have you ever heard of anything like this before? I hope I never hear anything like that again.

Sophie has nightmares. Sometimes it's just a little whimper or she "chases" bunnies, but sometimes she drops into a deep REM sleep and howls and cries. It's very sad but when I finally wake her up she doesn't seem to be upset and just goes back to sleep.

Extra hugs to Toby, hopefully those bad Christmas trees go away soon.

My dogs dream. They run, bark, chase, whimper from time to time but they have never screamed as they dreamed...even during REM.

Hope Toby is okay and no more nightmares!!!

Poor Toby-kins.

Artie makes these huffy-puffy sounds (I think, even in his dreams, he plays the tough guy) but he's never screamed.

The beauty of the fact that dogs live in the moment is that whatever he was nightmaring about is not being thought of anymore.

When you woke him up -- or when he woke up on his own -- was he acting his normal cute self?

That is what is so strange. He wasn't even panting or even had moved a muscle but I'm not kidding-that scream should have alerted the police. I wear TV Ears b/c my hearing loss and even with plugs in my ears I was shaken to my core. And we were watching Hell on Wheels on TIVO during a very tense scene. I checked on the kids, the other dog who sleeps in the laundry room on the ever present load of dirty clothes and the 2 cats. Every body was safe and content but hubby insists scream came from Toby.

Thanks for your comments. I have rep'd where I could.

Holy wow, that must've been loud if you had ear buds in.

When Artie's doing his huffy-puffy thing, he's either doing it or he's not doing it. There are no signs, even a split second afterwards, that he was agitated. Dogs are such funny and weird people.

My current pup just snores!!! In the past, I have had a dog that did that howl - she did not appear to move a muscle but was able to emit the eeriest, prolonged keening that would chill you to the bone! Did not happen frequently, but it always left me unnerved.

Both of ours huff and sometimes whimper. They both snore too. Takes some of the heat off of me...

Really creepy No Kudzu but I have experienced this with doggy X and not in a nice way. She never ever ever howls. The three times in her life that she howl and screamed in her sleep I swear to you there was a death in my family and/or a crazy accident involving a family member that resulted in a tragic injury. My dog rarely gets spooked but when she does or howls in her sleep, I lose sleep for the next few weeks!
