Right. I work as a psychiatric RN. I am acutely aware of my lack of reliable connections in emotional life. That's why I carry the emergency contact papers everywhere, and I still worry that I might have too many dogs for my designated friend to protect and board until the money for Best Friends is available.
Why on earth do people assume they must leave their assets to some blood relative, no matter how distant? Why not your hairdresser's daughter's college fund, or someone who helped you in some way, and organizations you support? This business of, Well, it'll go to my nephews I guess... No reason unless you want it to.
many states now allow you to do a pet trust where you have a person who acts as the
trustee for the dog, and many people also leave money for the care of the pet to cover
shots, vet bills, food etc. I did one for my dog. I agree, you do need to think about all this.
I have a friend, Pam, who would take Chelsea if it was needed. Chelsea gets along great with her dog Goldie. A client that I used to work for has her two dogs left in the will to us if she should pass on and that is a possibility since she has emphysema and alzheimers. Milly and Molly come and visit often and when Anne goes somewhere, we dog sit the two girls. I think that if something were to happen to me, that whoever took on my animals would feel overwhelmed and not with excitement, I have one dog, 4 cats, 6 rabbits, a parrot, a cocatiel, 29 chickens and 2 roosters. I used to have a lot more when I lived on acreage and I was raising Turkeys, rabbits and Chickens and a flock of 77 budgerigars ( parakeets ).

But you still need a person or household to care for the animal(s). In my case, I don't have anyone.
