I had a father and daughter keshounden both were diagnosed with ELS lupus. For the father his symptoms had already gotten too severe and we had to put him down because his lungs and heart were giving out. His daughter was immediately diagnosed and put on prednisone shots and other medications. Her over all heath improved and I had my baby girl until she was 15 her father had died at 12. Though the prednisone made her sleepy the three years of improved life was worth the side effects were minimal.
Keep the prednesone to as low a dose as possible. Our sweet little toy poodle had a lupus type autoimmune problem and was put on pred. After two years, her leg and foot joints were giving out on her. I made 4 booties for her so she wasn't walking on her heels and they helped, but we sadly ended up putting her down 1 year later because she'd lost the quality of life. We knew the time had come when walking became to painful for her and she just layed around looking miserable.
Prednesone is a wonderful drug for pain, but the side effects totally suck. If possible, try to find an alternative to keep the pain under control.
