Toby
is 4+ and not 3 like we thought
in spite of regular Advantix he has fleas-he got a 20- minutes -and- they -are dead -pill
he can't get all three shots at once cause he is so small
he gained 2.5 lbs in the year we've had him
Lucy
teeth cleaning will cost approximately $650 which includes possible 4 teeth extractions
she does not have fleas
she does not like having her nails trimmed
You DO NOT need to wait a day or two after a bath to apply Advantix
I need to have house and yard exterminator for fleas
I need pet insurance
I need to rob a bank- total today was $436 and still have to come back for kennel cough shot for toby. I declined junior and senior wellness checks, anal glands, fecal test and some injection for dogs who are outside a lot, did not buy heartworm meds cause it is cheaper online
and all this was for healthy dogs- so if anybody wonders if they can afford a dog, be warned properly caring for them is expensive.
is there a reson you need the bordatella vaccine? (kennel cough?) does he go to daycare or a groomer or board often? if not Dont bother its useless...
id also call around for other quotes for the dental, ie NEVER heard of a dental being that expensive even with 4 extractions.
even in ct, it was $200 for the anesthesia with basic cleaning, then $25-$50 per extraction depending on the tooth (some teeth extract easier than others) and i lived in fairfield county, one of the most expensive counties outside of california.
for the fleas in the house i suggest a product called nforcer home spray (from tractor supply) it works and is a fraction of the cost of having a pest control person come in.
i think enforcer makes a yard spray too...

bordetella 17.90 toby too little to get 3 shots at once
so I come back in a few weeks
I live in Chapel Hill, NC where most everything is more expensive. She is closest vet with great reputation. She calls me every few weeks to see how Oscar the sick cat with IBS is and that means alot. Toby's first vet visit since we got him at rescue last August. Lucy's first visit since wellness check a year ago.
Toby weighs 8 lbs and Lucy weighs 15 lbs.
I shudder to think of vet bills for bigger dogs and in metro areas like d.C.l and NYC. Would love to see comparrison charges for different parts of the country. I think 46.for heartworm blood test is ridiculous.
my excellent vet charges about $110 or so for the well-dog exam and vaccines....
hw test
fecal
5-in-1
1 year rabies
pedicure
anal sac expression
stem to stern examination
talk with "mom"
bandana or bow on neck or harness.....
I don't do the bordatella vaccines either.... don't really see the point......
and this year, since Bailey is 7-1/2 and has been vaccinated her entire life, I opted to skip the 5-in-1.... the vet agreed and then gave her a 3-year rabies in its place.......

The kill the flea pill is probably Capstar. You can find it on amazon at $25 for 6 pills.
Also why the price differential for their wellness exams?
To the OP - I don't have any advice but wanted to let you know I'm in the poor house with you. I love my Cavalier, but he is pricey. When I moved to Indy, I had made 'preferred status' at the vet after 3 months. He seems to get stress colitis every 3-4 months. He has had an abdominal tear, broken toenail that required extraction, and then the regular routine care that all dogs require. I wouldn't trade him for the world, but he expensive.
Wow my vet does the nail trim for free, my groomer does a nail and face trim for $8.00 (poodle) in between a full grooming. Basic wellness visit is around $40 or 50, heartworm test I think $25.00---and I live in CT. Wow those are some expensive prices!!!!!!!
foxy- I bath and trim their eyes between official haircuts at the groomer. They should go every 6-8 weeks but it is usually longer between visits, especially in the winter. I've tried to cut their hair and they end up looking like street urchins, I'm covered in fur and it is miserable for everyone. A badly groomed Bichon is not a pretty sight. They have to have kennel cough to go to groomer.
I agree this is ridiculous. I'm gonna stick with her for Oscar the cat but if I get the dogs' teeth cleaned I will shop around for better prices. I took Lucy to a neighboring town about 40 minutes away last time she had his teeth cleaned and I'll go there before I pay these crazy prices. She told me about pet insurance but said most don't take senior dogs (lucy is 10) and of course there is the issue of pre existing conditions. Thank you all for confirming that these prices are off the chart.
