Laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

Check with your county or city.

Yeah, but how many percentage of dog owners actually do it?

How do they enforce it.....going door to door?

they keep track f rabies certs and local vets, some will go door to door, some base if on neighbors reports...and lord hel you if your dog nips someone and isnt registered.

where i am right now theres no dog lisesncing for the town, the dog has to be up to date on rabies and that has to be kept "on file" but theres no additional liscensing, so currently none of my 3 dogs are "registered" with the town...their rabies numbers are howevr registered with the county. theres also no animal control in my county.
in ct, all our ogs were registered...the fines and risks are way too high on the off chance your caught. costs about $10 a year for a spay/neutered dog (and in many places its cheaper than that) well worth the "added protection" if you ask me.

If its anything like city, a person probably won't get caught unless animal control gets sent out for another reason...for example a barking dog complaint.

Compliance is generally pretty low but it probably depends on how much effort is put into enforcing the laws.
City fines (I know from experience) can be very expensive...especially if its a second offense.

Why wouldn't you? I love my dogs. They need their shots and they need to be registered. I wouldn't risk having them removed from my possession

A friend in Seattle said that this is exactly what they did to her--for cats. A man knocked on her door, presented his badge/documents, and asked to see her registrations.
I can't remember if her kitties were indeed registered.

I always did it in Denver. I still always do it for my cat now that we live here. All of my pets are up-to-date on their shots, and one of them is chipped. The licensing is for the county rather than our town. Where we live, I seriously doubt that animal control would ever go door-to-door. There are people in our county who don't even bother with heartworm medication, let alone pet licensing.

When (if) a complaint is made....AC will check to see if the animal has the proper license.

We are way out in the sticks and need licences for our dogs.
