I was reading about Coton de Tulears. There was a comment that they actually turn their heads when you talk to them.

I just just wondering: Do you talk to your dog (other than commands)? About what?

Of course! What dog owner doesn't? I talk to Rudy all the time, and he totally understands a lot of it... not in the same way as a human, but he gets the gist. For instance, if I say "wanna go to Petco/bye-bye/for a walk?", he'll tilt his head & wag his tail. And yes, I've tried using different words with the same tone, and he won't respond the same way! He also understands loving words, like when I'll pet him while saying "I love you so much, etc., etc."... seems to calm and comfort him, regardless of whether he understands the actual words. Sometimes we'll also have a talk when he's misbehaving, to which he'll respond by lowering his head and/or licking me - like he's apologizing with a kiss. Animals (of all types) are very perceptive, and truly have their own form of understanding human communication.

I no longer have a dog but when I did I would discuss politics, religion, and music with her quite often. She tended to agree with my views and never argued.

LOL... my dog knows better than to argue with me about politics, religion, or music. He's a proud liberal Jew, just like his momma. I actually tried to buy him a yarmulke recently (for Chanukah pictures), but they only had a small size - so we'll find one closer to the holidays.

Default I thought everyone did...

I talk to the dogs all the time. Now that I think about it, I actually talk to all kinds of animals. It never occured to me that people didn't! How funny. I guess they seem so alive. When you look into their eyes, I know there is something in there that seems so in tune that when I talk, I know they are listening. I love to talk to the dogs...they give me way less attitude than the kids, that's for sure.

I've always talked to my pets. And it's neat how they all follow around the house. I work from home, so the dogs all consider me the pack leader and they don't like to leave the house without me. My boyfriend is a little sad that he doesn't get as much love from them, but I don't feel guilty about that. I'm much nicer to them but without spoiling them. Plus I'm the one picking up their poop in the yard.

We talk to our dogs all the time as well. We even talked to our Turtles when we had them...We talk about how good or bad they are, how pretty they are, when we go outside for a walk...I think all of us do that ( talk to our pet(s) )!!!

My dogs are my sounding boards....I talk to them about everything...they know everything that goes on in my life...good or bad...and they understand words, big time!
We have our own doggy sign language and unconditional love! ... actions do speak louder than words...
