S.C. man apologizes for injuring puppy during fight with girlfriend.
CHARLESTON, S.C. - An incredulous judge sentenced a man to three years in prison for tossing a 10-week-old puppy off an apartment balcony during an argument with his girlfriend.
The Yorkiepoo, a cross between a Yorkshire terrier and a poodle, was in a soft-sided container but suffered head injuries and had to be put to death.
It pains me to see people write in worried terms about animal abusers because "they could do the same to a child/people." Yes, they could. But if they "only" cause pain and suffering and torture to an animal, that's bad enough, isn't it? The desire to inflict pain and suffering on a helpless being is a monstrous thing in itself, whether or not it's ever done to a person.
I've been trying to find out how to contact the judge in that case to thank him, but have had no luck.
That's a valid point, brightdoglover. Unfortunately, just as many people don't care about breed-specific legislation because it doesn't affect them (yet), many people don't care what happens to animals because it doesn't affect them(they think). One way to show them why it does affect them is to point out that someone who will do that to an animal would no doubt do that to a child or other person who is helpless, even temporarily. So, while I myself think that doing that to a puppy is in itself a horrible act, making a comment in that way is a way of telling someone why it should be important to them, before they even ask. I agree that it shouldn't be necessary but....
Thanks for the info, Mom2Five, and the idea, brightdoglover. I think I'll contact the judge, too, to let him know what I think of his decision.
