Before the 1930s, the family pet typically shared groceries with the rest of the house. Then the commercial pet food industry took off. Feast on these vintage magazine ads promoting convenience foods for Fido and his friends.

OMG, I don't know whether to laugh or be sick, LOL!! I remember most of those foods. Lucky for those manufacturers there were no ingredient labels back then!

We fed those, too, occasionally. We mainly fed table leftovers and Skippy canned food.

50 years ago, some of the commercial foods were pretty good stuff. For a few pennies, you could get canned dog food that was cooked meat.

The price of food has gone up steeply and pet owners still want cheap, and the commercial companies are just meeting their customer's demands when they produce cheap dog food that is nothing but floor sweepings.

There is a history of bringing out a decent kibble and then gradually cheapening up the ingredients while the established customers do not notice.

Some of the commercial dog foods I fed in the 60's, I would feed today if I could get the same stuff (which I can no longer buy).

50 years ago, the ingredients for dog food were not coming out of China.
