Well my 12 year Border Collie mix Tony had to get in to the vet today for his vaccination update. I had already been discussing his breathing with her and outside of sedation and taking an actual view, we're both convinced he's got laryngeal paralysis. The upside is he's at a healthy weight and I keep our home at 60* year round, so he stands a greater chance than most for a while to come.
On the good news front, the gnawing on knuckle bones has paid off, this is the first visit in a few years we didn't have to discuss doing a dental

CFF, the signs (that I noticed) was with his breathing. It became more of a panting even at rest, but that was due to a rise in body heat as he would only be uncomfortable when my husband is home and Tony insists on sleeping in between us. It isn't as much of a labored breathing, as a cooling type of panting. In the dead of Winter, he has even woke us up at 3:00am due to needing to catch his breath. Hiss barker is "off" if you will, doesn't sound right.

The vet did say what is on our side is that he is not overweight. So now as long as we keep his weight decent and don't allow him to get overheated we should be "alright".
Most often this condition is what idiopathic, some of the larger breeds (Labs etc) it can be hereditary. His vet agrees with me that the trauma early in his contributed to this condition. When he was found he had spent a year of his life on a chain. The collar was so tight his skin had grown over it.
Cleosmom, sorry to hear about your dog. I want to share my LP expirience with you. I m a young vet from Romania and a 12 year old Romanian Shepard owner. She also has LP. I ve diagnosted her 2 years ago and we don t have the possibility to do surgery on her, because none of my teachers could do it (know how). I couldn t give up on her so I ve searched for other remedies and that is how I got in touch with a homeopath vet. I followed the remedy and she is still alive, not perfect, but LP didn t progress. She has a normal live, of course with minimum effort (no running, little playing etc) and her barking got better. The remedy is: Conium maculatum 9CH, Arsenicum album 9CH and Zincum 9CH once a week (you can find the remedies in homeopath farmacies for humans, just say the right concentration/ 9CH). The treatment is long, in my case it took 5 months to see the effects, but I was really happy that I did see something (I didn t believe much about homeopathy before). My dog is still on the treatment and I think I ll give it to her for the rest of her life. Hope this would help your dog too and sorry for my English
Lots of good advice and I hope the dog will be OK. Another suggestion, maybe using a harness (instead of a collar) would help, it would be less stress on the neck area, we use them for small dogs all the time bc they have delicate trachea areas, anyway hope some of this helps -
