Poor girl. She just can't catch a break. She just had surgery for her torn ACL on her back left leg 3 weeks ago. She was finally starting to put a little weight on that leg. Yesterday I was helping her into the car to go visit my sister. She wiggled out of my arms and immediately tried to jump up herself. I heard her yelp, then she cried for a few minutes. She has had the same bad limp on her back right leg ever since. Will be taking her in first thing Monday morning.

I feel terrible. She had a lot of trouble with stress with the first surgery. (Not being able to run around, staples bugging her, etc) I'm sure the vet will have more input, but has anyone else experiences two injuries with their dog back to back like this? I'm wondering if it's better to put off the surgery for a bit so they won't be so close back to back. Thanks for any input.

She is a 50 lbs lab/border collie mix btw.

Argh, I feel so sorry for your dog (and yourself). How old is she? No clue about when (or if) to have more surgery, maybe it'll heal on its own, I think I'd hold off a bit given she just had surgery. Best wishes

She is 6, but she still has a ton of energy and has been very healthly all around before these injuries.

The only input now would be to follow the post operative instructions and whatever the vet says on Monday.

According to our vet, it's the norm for one leg to go out shortly after surgery on the other. They start putting the bulk of their weight on the good leg, and shortly there after, it goes. It happened with our Golden Retriever, and yes, the surgeries were pretty much back to back. Somehow, knock wood, our Lab didn't suffer the same fate. She had surgery on one almost 2 yrs ago, and the other leg has held up well.

This is what my vet told me when my shepherd had the operation. Sad to say 8 months later he had pancreatic cancer. He was only 3 yrs

Sorry OP about your dog this is expensive and VERY time consuming.

I just found out today that my 5 year old German Shepherd tore his ACL a while back. We took him to the vet last year for limping, but my dog gets so rigid when the vet touches him that it's hard to flex his legs/hips around. He occasionally limps after playing rough, but he's always fine again the next day after waking up, so we figured he just had sore hips (Shepherd genes). We stopped playing rough a year ago and started taking him on daily walks instead. Supposedly, the knee healed up with extra tissue around it, but it needs surgery to fix it correctly because he's favoring his other leg. We discussed his occasional limping at his check up today, and I requested x-rays. That's how we found out what was really going on.
I was quoted $3,500-4,000 for a specialist dog surgeon. My mom's 30 lb dog had knee surgery at a small vet nearby, and it was about $750. Mine is 110 lbs. We're going to see what the small vet charges instead of the specialist. I feel bad for my big boy, but he hides pain so well. He never whimpers or anything.

Sorry to hear this. It's not uncommon for the other knee to go out shortly after. It's up to you whether or not you want to wait to do the other surgery. Unfortunately, she probably will be limping around.

I hope your dog feels better soon.

Our 9 year old Dobie had her left knee go out. I took her to the vet for x-rays. He said their orthopedic surgeon could operate. I said no at 9 years old. I have had her on Dr Fosters and Smith Premium Plus joint care nuggets and 1 1200 mg Omega 3 fish oil cap every day. She is doing much better and is a happy dog. The only negative is I have not played fetch with her which I used to do daily.
She is about 85 lbs now down fron 90. I will not put a 9 year old dog through major surgery if it is not life threatening. As I said she is happy and gets around fine.
