Posting this for a friend.

The dog is about 11 years old (lab) and is very overweight. Recently diagnosed with diabetes. The owner had previously kept a full bowl of food for the dog to eat whenever she wanted. Now that she is getting insulin shots he is only putting the food out twice a day in the amount the Vet recommended. Unfortunately, she is only eating in the evening right now and he can't give her the shot in the morning.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to get her to eat in the AM?

I had two dogs with diabetes (mother and pup) years ago and I didn't have a problem like this. Wondering what he can do to get her on a regular eating routine.

When my dogs had diabetes, I didn't have the problem often, but it can happen.

I would suggest finding a low glycemic wet/canned food for the morning meal. It doesn't have to be much, but just enough to get them to eat something. Maybe even some rice and chicken, or yogurt. Something that is especially appealing to the dog.

I've never had that problem. Usu. fed my dogs once in evening, followed by choice treats. But occasionally I feed my senior dog in the morning.

I give her dry kibble (evening kibble is mixed with green beans, tiny bits of chicken, etc.....but not in the a.m.). Any time she finishes eating out of her dish, regardless of which meal it is, she gets a semi-healthy treat (or two). But only if she eats most of her meal.

She learned years ago that to get those treats, she has to eat most or all of her main course. No problemo.

I wonder if the dog's vet could suggest the minimal amount of food the dog needs to eat in order to still give the shot. Is a teaspoon enough? A tablespoon? Just a treat, what? Might lessen the anxiety over being able to give the insulin while the dog is learning to eat 2 smaller meals a day.
