We are semi retired and have been without a dog for several years. We have a cat. DH has said he does not want to be tied down with a pet because eventually we want to be free to travel without any encumbrances. Although I agree, in principle, as an empty nester I miss having something besides him to fuss over.
Today, a dachshund from next door wandered under the fence, put his head in the door, walked in and made himself at home. Such a sweety.
DH helped the young man next door to patch the fence, and then said that when I was not working he would be OK with getting another dog.
I always said I'd be getting one, but make him think it was his idea. LOL.
I've taken my GSD mix with me when I've gone out of town without any problem. I worked in a 400 room airport hotel and we welcomed pets. The GM told pet owners that in his 40 plus career in the hotel business he NEVER had to throw a drunk dog out of a hotel!
If you travel, especially by vehicle, all you need to do is ensure the hotel/motel is pet friendly. Some charge an extra deposit but it's refundable. I had a GREAT time traveling with my GSD who weighs about 55lbs and she enjoyed it as well I think. My colleague took her two dogs when we attended a seminar and when we returned the first evening the hotel staff told us her dogs went swimming! The doors had lever type handles and her one dog figured out how to open it! The guests were enchanted watching her enormous dog swim. Needless to say my colleague was less thrilled thinking about other endings to the story!
I think you are right. I can't imagine too many places we would go that we couldn't go with a small dog. It's not as if we will be going on world cruises or anything.
We travel with our two big dogs all the time. We've had some great adventures with them and found places that we wouldn't have tried if we didn't have dogs. Glad to hear your evil plot is working.
Good for you! I don't think I could ever live without a dog in my life. It's just too quiet. I had 5 cats at one time and had just lost my second dog. I didn't adopt another dog for 6 months and I'm really surprised I waited that long. I love my cats but they're just not the same as dogs.
My wife and I travelled all over the USA and Canada for 5 years and we did it with our two sweetie pie fur faced friends. You know, I really don't think we would have half the fun we did without them.
