There are all kinds of reactions our dogs have, but the most amazing one came from Hallie, who we lost a year ago. She knew what I was about to do just by tuning into my breathing. I always wondered why should would get up and start moving around just as I was about to stand up. Then I realized I always let out a little sigh before I do. Most dogs are great observers of their people, but Hallie was right up there with the best. When my husband used to smoke, she would get up to go back in the house right before he stubbed out a cigarette. It was that last exhale that told her he was done.
Whenever the kitchen timer goes off, he gets so excited. He'll run into the kitchen, run to whatever room I'm in, run back to the kitchen, run back to me... until I go into the kitchen. He doesn't even get any of the food, and doesn't eat at the same time as us. I don't get why he is so excited, but sometime about our dinner time is very exciting to him.
The sound of tin foil. She comes running no matter where she is or what she's doing. Sometimes the tin foil catches the light and makes a reflection on the wall. She likes to herd light reflections, so that's why she has such a powerful association with the sound of tin foil.
The other one is the sound of the garbage disposal. Same automatic response, she comes running. I think a couple times the disposal must have flung a morsel of food up and onto the floor for her. I can't imagine why else that sound would produce such a strong reaction!
Getting a knife out of the drawer when the peanut butter is out. Just the peanut butter alone won't do it, because she knows nothing will happen without the knife.
Putting ice cubes in a cup. She knows one will get dropped on 'accident'.
